Meet Chef
Onil Chibás
A native of New York City and Massachusetts, Chef Onil Chibás brings a dynamic and creative perspective to Pasadena's dining culture, shaped by his diverse background in both the arts and hospitality. After earning his degree at Boston University and working in animation production for Disney and DreamWorks Studios, Chibás shifted his creative energy into food. A graduate of Le Cordon Bleu, he has spent more than 20 years working with clients, catering events, and running Elements Café and Kitchen, where he developed a reputation for inventive menus and warm hospitality.
In 2022, Chibás opened Deluxe 1717, a neighborhood eatery and wine bar in Northeast Pasadena, with menus showcasing New American cuisine infused with Cuban roots and an emphasis on fresh, local produce. His culinary style reflects both his heritage and his passion for seasonal, sustainable ingredients.
Delivering style and one-on-one personalization for private events, Chef Onil’s creative talents also shine in Chibás Events, his full-service catering company. Beyond the kitchen, he serves on the board of The Urban Homestead Institute, supporting its mission of advancing urban farming and sustainability.

Serving high-quality food is second nature for longtime chef and caterer Onil Chibás of Pasadena.
Formerly running Elements Kitchen in the renowned Pasadena Playhouse, Chibás now offers Deluxe 1717, a warm and welcoming eatery with indoor and outdoor seating.
It’s next to an Armenian butcher and specialty store, ice cream shop and pizza joint on Washington Boulevard.
“We are very happy to open a new restaurant here in Northeast Pasadena,” said Chibás, who attended Le Cordon Bleu in Pasadena. “It’s very exciting to see the changes that are happening in this neighborhood, and it’s a joy to be a part of it.”
Onil Chibás describes the menu as “New American” because it weaves food from around the globe with classical French training. Highlights include the Cuban sandwich, Asian fish and chips, the Deluxe burger, and house-smoked St. Louis ribs (Chris Mortenson/Staff photographer)
